Making the Best of Your Diet

Making the best of your diet - Tips to consider that may affect your weight loss success

We all know how important diet and exercise is to our overall health. It prevents illness, prolongs life, and we look and feel better. As a result, most of us have been on a diet at some point in our life. It may have been the recommendation of the doctor, who told you that obesity and diabetes is fatal combination or it may have been for something far less serious like getting in to that prom, wedding, brides maid's dress. In any event, to successfully lose weight and achieve the results you want, it is important to first understand your own lifestyle at the present time to help you choose a diet.

Instead of choosing a diet based on what it can do for you, one should choose a diet based on what you can do with it. You should then take in to consideration what you can do with it and couple that with what you already do normally. The reason diets fail is because we choose to make too many changes all at once instead incorporating them into our lifestyle bit by bit. The initial key to long term weight loss starts with convenience. Ask yourself these questions.

Can I eat anything I want?

If a diet states that you can eat anything you like, it can often mean that there is a system in place that helps you eat in moderation. They system may be simple or complicated. Sometimes it may mean that you may need to exercise more, because weight loss is achieved by burning off more calories than we consume. You definite want to make sure that the system, whatever it is, accommodates your lifestyle.

Are there only certain things I can eat and do I eat those things naturally?

If a diet requires that you only can eat protein, you have to really consider how much protein do you usually eat? Many of those diets come with cookbook with recipes full things we may not normally eat. While it is great to try new foods, if a diet is based on foods that you do not normally or foods that you dislike, you may find it difficult to stick to the diet.

How many hours of physical exercise required for weight loss?

You have to think about how feasible it is for you to be able to workout. Does it have to be a traditional workout or can it be taking a walk during lunch. Most good diets do require that we exercise or increase our daily activity in some way.

Do I have time to prepare my meals?

Many diets require food preparation. Food preparation for some diets is the ammunition that allows us to fight the battle of the bulge. Do you have time to prepare a salad everyday after working 10 hours? Cooked food is always better when dieting because you know exactly what is in it and you are more aware of your portions.

Does it offer pre-cooked and pre-packaged meals or meal replacement bars and drinks?

If food preparation is a challenge, trying diets that offer pre-packaged meal or replacement bars may be a solution, namely Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig. Since convenience is the one of the keys to success, diets that offer pre-cooked/pre-packaged meals can be very helpful, especially if you have a hectic lifestyle. You should caution however, they may be higher in salt content. (to preserve the food)

Can I eat out and what can I eat?

Dining out while dieting can be disastrous especially because dieting out often requires consuming more than one course. Do you have a lifestyle that is to conducive to dining out? Do you entertain clients? A good diet should offer a guide to eating out at the least. However, many restaurants have low calorie and low carb options for the diet patron.

After you ask those questions, one should then begin evaluating his/her lifestyle. Again, the question is what do you do naturally. It will be easier to incorporate a diet into lifestyle that we do naturally. Consider the following:

How early do you wake up?

Do you wake up just in time to make it out the door? Do you watch the news? Do you eat breakfast? These are things to consider in a diet especially since most of them require a good breakfast.

How early can you wake up?

Are you a morning person? Would you be able to get your workout done in the morning? Since exercising in the morning boosts your metabolism, it might be a good idea to wake up early, if you can. Some people who have trouble sleeping at night might have an issue getting up earlier than usual.

How long is your total commute?

For many people, every minute counts. If you have a 2 hour commute everyday, that is time deducted from the time you could be exercising or preparing your meals. It is also a time that your are required to be sedentary.

How long is my work day?

Is your workday 8 hours including a lunch or excluding lunch? There is a huge difference between a 35 hour work week than 45 hour work week in regards to preparation and exercise but also, the level of fatigue you may feel when you when you do go home. Time and level of fatigue is a factor to always consider.

How strenuous is your job?

Your energy level is also vital to successful weight loss. Even though many people like to diet and exercise to gain more energy, if you overexert yourself when you are already tired, your chances for successfully dieting dwindle. Moreover, if your job is that strenuous you may use it as your exercise. On the other hand, being overly tired due to fatigue defeats of exercising  and improving your overall health.

Do I have responsibilities when I come from work?

This is a huge one. Consider what you have to do when you come home. Do you have actual downtime? Do you have Graduate classes? Do you have a family? Does your diet require that you cook a separate meal from the one you prepare for your family? Sometimes learning how to prioritize and organize your responsibilities before adding the new responsibility of your health is necessary for the diet to be successful.

Once you have taken some real consideration about what you can do with your diet, then you will be able to make lifestyle changes that are more feasible, more effective and that you will be able to truly stick with.
